Algarve, the perfect family destination

A couple of times a year we visit the Algarve with the boys. My sister lives there with my father and her family and we just love everything about it. In this blog I’ll try to convince you why it’s just a little piece of heaven close to home.

We usually fly from Eindhoven or Rotterdam with Transavia or Ryanair to Faro. Sometimes we fly from Brussels Airport with Brussels Airlines, so plenty of choice to travel to the Algarve. It’s a two and a half hour flight, just perfect with the kids. Finn and Sun have been traveling to the Algarve since they were one month old and it’s one of their favorite destinations so far.

Why travel to the Algarve?

  • They have the best (sea)food

  • We keep discovering the most beautiful beaches every single time

  • You can discover thé best surf spots

  • Lovely mountain bike tours (for the entire family, even babies)

  • Perfect for a roadtrip

  • Nature is wild and free

  • Your children will love it

  • Stroll around the picturesque villages with the lovely colored houses and have a drink or fresh fish in a local place

Places to eat in the Algarve

  • My favorite place: Cabanas Velhas
It’s a hidden beachbar behind a beautiful drive. They have the best food, beds to lay down with the kids, and it has a beautiful cove to enjoy the sea and the view

  • Have the best home made ice-cream at Alice in Sagres

  • Chiringuito Praia de Mareta: have a drink or a little snack with a lovely ocean view

  • Boia Bar in Salema Beach: oysters, seafood, have a wine or an ice-cream with the kids with seaview

  • Martinhal Beach House: have a sea food platter

  • Carlos: have a lunch or dinner in Sagres. They have the best seafood and desserts. Carlos himself will serve you with a smile

  • Aqua Salgada: the best pancakes, but also food. By night it turns into a dancing cafe

  • Martinhal Family Resort: perfect if you want a more all-inclusive family vacation. They have fine restaurants and children’s activities as well

  • Go to the market in Sagres (in the morning): Merkado 25 de Abril for fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and so much more

Visit Lagos, historic city center and have drink near the harbor

In case of rain (yes even in Portugal it may rain), go to a lovely indoor pool with a spa and golf resort: Boa Vista Golf Resort

Last but not least, enjoy the slow tempo of live in the South. It’s one of the most healthy places in Europe, since there is very little industry and a lovely wind.
