Our big fat Greek trip

Island hopping in the land of the blue water

The first time I went to Greece was in the midst of the crisis, ten years ago. I visited Athens back then and I did nog get the right vibe. So glad we gave it another try with the entire family, because Greece: you are beautiful and the perfect family holiday!

Landing with a bang

We flew from Brussels Airlines straight to Athens, in the midst of an earthquake (6,3). We experienced lots of turbulence on our flight, so when we landed I didn’t even notice there was an earthquake. Our luggage rolled over to the other side of the street, so that’s how I noticed something was going on. But all good, nobody got hurt and we enjoyed our first stop: Athens.

We rented a lovely Air B&B near the Acropolis, what a view! After taking our luggage up, we took the stroller outside to explore the neighbourhood and have an ice-cream. I highly recommend this area. The Acropolis is one of Greece’s most famous monuments and historical site. There is a great atmosphere, lovely restaurants and places to enjoy some Greek Yoghurt with any topping you like. Go for a walk around the Acropolis and enjoy locals playing music while you explore the Parko Thiseio, Theatre from Herodes, the Acropolis Museum and so much more. The next morning we had a lovely breakfast before heading to our next destination: Peloponnesos.

Blueness

We drove through Epidavros to Portochelli, a two and a half hour drive from Athens. What’s amazing about Greece is the blueness everywhere: from the water, to the sky, the flag and the boats. We rented a house in Portochelli, with a magnificent view. We like to rent a house with the kids, because we can make it a little bit of a home for a couple of days and have a swim when the sun is burning. After making the Portochelli house our home, we decided to take a walk in the marina and we had an amazing diner near the sea.

The entire Peloponnesos feels like an Oikos Greek Yoghurt commercial. It’s the perfect destination for island hopping. What to visit?

Hydra

  • Why? It’s a 100% car free island with donkeys instead of cars

  • Visit the favorite place where Leonard Cohen used to sit on a bench with an amazing view

  • Have seafood at the harbor

  • Go for a swim in lovely rocky Kamini Beach

  • Walk around the island (with a stroller) and enjoy the beautiful colorful houses

Rent a sailing boat

We rented a boat at Portochelli harbor to sail into the Greek waters. Our captain took us to abandoned places to take a swim, he prepared us a lovely Greek lunch. Must do! Visit: Argonaftis Koutsouris

Erminioni beach

A beautiful hidden beach with a dock and a lovely family beachbar with the best food and music: Godai Seascape.

Go for waterski in Kranidi, it took me a couple of tries to get up, but once you get up, you are ready to ski that Greek blue water.

Have breakfast or lunch in Drougas Food House or Drougas Bakery.

We enjoyed the Peloponnesos so much, and we also enjoyed some family time in our Portochelli home.
If you’re still not convinced to visit Greece, here are some picture to convince you even more and also: the people are SO friendly, they adore kids, the food is great, and you just keep discovering. Greece: we will be back, maybe next year?
